JAMB Pegs Cut-off Marks for 2020/2021 Admissions

News - Women's Perspective

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has set the cost-off marks for the 2020 admissions into Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

In a release posted today, 16th June, the cut-off marks have been pegged for admissions into the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The board through the registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede pegged the admission cut-off marks at the following:

  1. Universities: 160 and above
  2. Polytechnics: 120 and above
  3. Colleges of Education: 100 and above

Professor Oloyede added that 1,157,977 candidates in the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, met the minimum requirements of 5 credits including Mathematics and English.

Out of that number, 612,557 were offered admissions leaving 510,957 slots unused.

For the 2020 JAMB admissions, the Minister of Education Prof Adamu Adamu, has directed higher institutions to commence the conduct of admissions for 2020/2021.

The information was made available by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Emeka Nwajiuba, Tuesday, 16th June. The process is scheduled to commence in August. The admissions should take into consideration the new realities brought on the country by #COVID19.

The Minister, however, enjoined JAMB to be lenient with candidates who had obtained their Senior School Certificate Examination in previous years.

According to him: “As major stakeholders, we must jointly come up with reactions that would realign our programs to the new realities.

“While these reactions are being fine-tuned to check their capacities and capabilities to withstand the new reality, JAMB and tertiary institutions could take advantage of the current situation and consider candidates with previous years’ Senior School Certificate Examination and other qualifying results, to proceed on with the admission process.

Speaking further, Adamu Adamu added that “whatever arrangement that the country comes up with in the long run, will surely accommodate those who will be taking the examination when the opportunity to do so is worked out.”
