John Momoh, Founder of Channels Television has been appointed the interim Chairman of UNILAG Governing Council.
The appointment was approved by President Mohammdu Buhari and made public today, 25th August, 2020.
While responding to enquiries by newsmen, Director, Press and Information of the Ministry of Education, Bem Goong said, “it is confirmed, John Momoh is now Acting Council Chair.”
He takes over from Dr Wale Babalakin who was directed to recuse himself along with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.
John Momoh is the current President of the UNILAG Alumni Association Worldwide.
A charismatic personality who commands the respect of the University community, he will act as the representative of the Federal Government in coordinating the affairs of the institution.
The new Chairman is expected begin by ratifying the election of the new Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folashade Ogunsola.
In a letter addressed to the new Chairman and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, Mr Momoh is directed to convene an emergency meeting of the council. The purpose of the meeting is indeed to “consider and if found suitable, approve the Senate nomination of the Acting Vice Chancellor for the University of Lagos, in line with the enabling Act.”
Further directive is “to also submit a report on the decision of the council to the Visitor through the Honourable Minister of Education immediately thereafter.”
Prof Folasade Ogunsola was elected UNILAG Acting Vice-Chancellor on Monday by the Senate of the University in a landslide victory.
She is expected to also help steer the institution out of the current tension arising from the fracas between the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, and Chairman, Governing Council, Wale Babalakin.
