The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has lamented the recent attacks in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The assault claimed the lives of over 35 people. In view of the incessant fatal attacks, the CAN youth wing has called on Nigerians to defend themselves against the bandits.
It also asked the Federal Government and security agencies to up their game in protecting lives and property across the country.
The Chairman of the youth arm of CAN, Pharm Mark Moses urged government to rise up to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and defending the defenceless citizens.
On its part, the main body of CAN in the State, led by the Chairman, Rev Fr Lubo Polycarp expressed displeasure over the mass killings and also urged Christians in the state to defend themselves.
He, However, called for calm and urged the youths to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner and channel their energy towards protecting their communities.
In a statement issued on Sunday to journalists in Abuja by the National Chairman of CAN Youth Wing (YOWICAN), Belusochukwu Enwere, the group said there is a need for government and security agencies to prevent future attacks in any part of the state.
According to him, “YOWICAN condemns Plateau killings, urges Christians to defend themselves.”
“We condemn in totality, the gruesome killings of over 35 plateau citizens, especially Christians on the 25th August 2021 in a midnight attack where houses and churches were burnt including a primary school in Kunga of Zangam.
“This is not acceptable. Where are our leaders ? The labour of our heroes past are bringing to be in vain. Nigeria is sliding into anarchy where religious and ethnic terrorism is spreading like wildfire.
“Christian youths across the country and indeed Nigerians should defend themselves against killers before we are all consumed. This is unacceptable and condemnable.
“Enough is enough. The act of wilful killing in Nigeria especially the recent ugly situation in Plateau State must stop with immediate effect.
“We condemn the killings in totality. All Nigerians must live together as people of one indivisible nation.
“Therefore, we call on the government and its relevant institutions and agencies to rise up and protect the people and stop playing politics with the lives of its citizens.”
