Reports just received say that Boko Haram insurgents have imposed taxes on residents and communities in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
The State Governor, Muhammed Bello, yesterday lamented the displacement of thousands of the local government area residents particularly around Munya and Shiroro.
According to him, “There are some other communities that we think are safe but a vast majority of them will have to remain her because their villages and towns have have been taken over by Boko Haram.”
The governor added that, “I just heard they have already placed their flag in Kauri which means they have taken over the territory.”
He expressed fears that the communities are quite close to Abuja and that the city might be at risk.
A police source is said to have told The Gazette that the community, Awasha, Chiri and many others were under Boko Haram control. The insurgents also control the commerce in the communities.
Many believe that the insurgents funds itself through kidnap for ransom and looting of local communities, others say also general money from taxes on communities.
A source adds that they have also imposed taxes on local farmers and fishermen around the Shiroro lake while residents are made to pay VAT on all local transactions.
Besides the taxes, local residents also go farming for the insurgents.
