The Governor of Delta State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has, like his other Southern Counterparts, signed the anti-open grazing bill into law.
The bill prohibits among other things, the open grazing of animals, indiscriminate breeding, rearing and marketing of livestock in the whole of Delta State.
The bill was signed into law following the approval by the State House of Assembly. It is also sequel to a motion moved by the majority leader, Ferguson Onwo during plenary on Tuesday last week.
The state government is optimistic that the passage of the bill means that Deltans who seek to carry on the business of breeding, rearing and marketing of livestock will henceforth do so within the ambits of the law.
It is hoped that the law will also bring about peace within communities as farmers can once again go about their businesses without fear of herders grazing on their crops or being attacked by vicious herders.
It is also expected to boost food production in the state.
