A former popular member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan has been slammed with a 12-year jail term for demanding a bribe of $3 million and receiving an initial $500,000
Justice Angela Otaluka of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday, found Lawan guilty in a 3-count charge brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The lawmaker was the Chairman of the House Ad Hoc Committee on Petroleum Subsidy Regim in 2012.
He was dragged to court by the ICPC on behalf of the Federal Government.
Farouk Lawan was a 4-term member of the House of Representatives representing the Bagwa/Shanowo Federal Constituency of Kano State between 199 and 2015.
He was, in a case marked FCT/HR/CR/76/13, alleged to have demanded the sum of $3 million for himself from the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, Femi Otedola.
The lawmaker was seen in a video which went viral, collecting a $500,000 out of the demanded sum to enable him remove Otedola’s company from the list of firms indicted by the ad hoc committee for allegedly abusing the fuel subsidy regime 2012.
He was slammed with a 12-year jail term comprising 5 years and and another 7years. Both terms will run concurrently.
Farouk Lawan was also directed to restitute the sum of $500,000 he collected from Otedola to the Federal government coffers.
