The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered that the bank accounts linked to the promoters of the #EndSARS protest be unfrozen.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed gave the ruling on Wednesday following the withdrawal of all processes filed in relation to the suit by lawyers to all parties.
In a ruling on Wednesday, Justice Ahmed Mohammed ordered all concerned banks to immediately unfreeze the affected accounts.
The judge also struck out the suit filed by the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele in respect of which the ex-parte order freezing the bank accounts for 180 days was issued on the 4th of November, 2020.
Counsel to the Central Bank Governor, Michael Aondoakaa (SAN) and that of the promoters, Femi Falana (SAN) told the court at the commencement of today’s hearing that they have agreed to withdraw all processes filed.
According to them, they resolved to withdraw the case for peace to reign and to give room for the ongoing reconciliation process at the various panels of inquiry into police brutality across some states of the federation to proceed smoothly.
Nineteen bank accounts of linked to the #EndSARS protest were lat year frozen by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The action followed the request filed on the 20th of October to the court by the Central Bank that the accounts be frozen.
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho had revealed that accounts of the #EndSARS protesters were frozen in error.
According to him, the court intended to freeze the accounts of corporate bodies on suspicion of money laundering.
Justice Tsoho made the disclosure during the special court session to mark the beginning of 2020 to 2021 legal year of the court.
He said that the CBN only sought to freeze the bank accounts of some corporate bodies but never attached names to the request.
