The government of Ogun State has shut down the popular Iberekodo market in Abeokuta due to the outbreak of cholera in the area.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Chief Executive Officer of the State Waste Management Authority, Ola Oresanya disclosed the development to newsmen.
He said the decision was the taken because the market was operating below minimum hygiene standards.
Oresanya added that the government is concerned about safeguarding its citizens against the outbreak of communicable and deadly diseases like cholera.
He lamented the heaps of refuse in and around the market and that the unhygienic atmosphere would affect the food stuff being sold for human consumption.
The government official noted that traders have failed to heed government’s earlier warnings to compl with public
Hygene protocols as they related to market sanitation so the they leave the government with no choice than to shut it down.
He added that, “The stage government will not fold its arms and watch a few traders compromise the health of millions of our people by trading in a dirty environment.
“The market will remain shut until the traders clean the market environment of all dirt and clear the illegal dumping site within the market.
The Special Adviser also warned traders in other markets across the state, be it daily or weekly to make cleanliness their watchword.
Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. – WebMD
