Former Ghanaian President, Jerry Rawling is dead.
Reports say he died this morning of complications arising from Covid19.
Ghana’s former leader was admitted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, the Ghanaian capital.
The man seen to have taken the bull by the horns to sanitise Ghana’s socio-political landscape as a junior Airforce Officer was born on the 22nd of June, 1947 to an European father and a Ghanaian mother.
He is said to brought security, prosperity and confidence in his country.
The then Flight Lieutenant who ruled Ghana from 1981 – 2001 first staged a military coup as a young revolutionary on May 15, 1979.
This was five weeks before the elections scheduled to return the country to civil rule.
When the coup failed, Rawlings was publicly tried, court-martialled and sentenced to death.
Rawlings escaped from prison to lead another coup when he seized power again.
He thereafter led a military junta until 1992 when he served the country twice in succession as a democratically elected President.
He later handed over power to a civilian government but took back power on the 31st of December 1981 as the Chairman of the Provisional National Council (PNDC).
Jerry Rawlings resigned from the military and founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
It was on that platform that he was elected the first President of the 4th Republic of Ghana. He was elected in 1996 for another four years.
Having served the constitutional 2-term as Ghanaian President, Jerry Rawlings endorsed his Vice, John Attah Mills as Presidential Candidate.
In total, he ruled Ghana for 20 years.
