US President-Elect, Joe Biden has revealed plans to unveil an immigrant policy in his first days in office.
The bill seeks to offer hope for an 8-yaer path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants living in the US without legal documents.
This is a huge reversal from President Trump’s hash immigration policies.
The legislation puts the President-elect on a part to fulfilling one of his major campaign promises important to Latino voters and other immigrant communities.
It also seeks to reverse 4 years of Trump’s restrictive policies and mass deportations.
The move will in addition fast-track pathways to citizenship for those living without legal status.
There are however, doubts about the smooth passage of the bill as it does not address the traditional trade-off of enhanced border security favoured by many Republicans.
During the campaigns, Biden called Trump’s actions an “unrelenting assault” on American values and promised to “undo the damage” while not neglecting border enforcement.
The legislation offers those living in the US as of January 1, 2021, without legal documents, a five-year path to temporary legal status or green card if they pass background checks, pay taxes and fulfil other basic requirements. From then on, they get a three-year path to naturalisation if they decide to apply for citizenship.
The “Dreamers”, young people who arrived as young children, agricultural workers and people under temporary protective status could qualify more immediacy for green cards if they are employed, in school or meet other criteria.
