The death has been announced of the last white President of South Africa, F W de Klerk.
The information was made public in a statement by Dave Steward, Chairman of the FW de Klerk Foundation today, 11th of November. He was aged 85 and died at his home in Fresnaye after a battle with with lung cancer.
According to FW de Klerk Foundation, “It is with the deepest sadness that the FW de Klerk Foundation must announce that former President FW de Klerk died peacefully at his home in Fresnaye earlier this morning following his struggle again,” the statement said.
De Klerk was the last white man to rule South Africa in the repressive apartheid regime. His tenure lapsed between 1989 and 1994
He is said to have facilitated the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. Mandela thereafter, contested and won the South African Presidential election.
The apartheid regime was notorious for injustice against the black citizens, mass murders, unchecked extra-judicial killings and blatant racial discrimination.
