Nigerian Senante has rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, Personal Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Onochie was rejected following the report by the Senate Committee on INEC led by Senator Kabir Gaya who said her nomination breached Federal Character principles.
The Senator cited Section 14 (1) 3 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which states that a commissioner from her zone was already in place and that the law remains clear about that.
The committee clarified that there is currently a serving commissioner from Delta State being the home state of the nominee.
The upper legislative chamber also stood the approval of Professor Sani Mohammed Adam until further notice.
