Senate plenary was disrupted this morning following the heavy rain that caused large volumes water to flow through the leaking roof into the hallow chambers.
Reports say that the flood also spread to the lobby of the chambers as well as the Press Centre in the senate wing.
Cleaners and premises managers had a hard time scooping water in buckets from the floor while Senators were forced to seek shelter at the Lower Chambers or remain in their cars while the rain held sway.
Mobile Punch reports that, “The leadership of the National Assembly had in 2020 approved N37bn for the renovation of the edifice, built about 27 years ago.“
Nigerian Tribune adds that there was public outcry last year, 2020 against the allocation of the whooping budget of N37 billion for the renovation of the Assembly complex.
The newspaper quotes the Director General of the Budget Office, Ben Akabueze as clarifying that only N9.2 billion was provided for the renovation and retrofitting of the National Assembly complex.
He added that the “initial provision of N37 billion in the 2020 Appropriation Act for this was cut by 75% due to the impact of Covid19 on government revenues.”
Nigerian Senate consists of 109 members
