The moment the ministerial nominee, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, slumped during his screening at the Senate chamber has been captured on video.
Balarabe had been speaking for several minutes when he suddenly collapsed and fell on the floor.
The development led to a chaotic scene in the Chamber, with several lawmakers rushing to the aid of the former Secretary to the Kaduna State Government.
The nominee, who was standing on the podium, collapsed when Kaduna South Senator, Sunday Marshall Katung, was speaking about Balarabe’s administrative experience in Kaduna.
After Balarabe finished reading his profile before the senators, the Kaduna lawmaker, while endorsing Balarabe’s ministerial nomination, said all three senators from the state had no objection to his nomination.
Senator Katung had not finished his remarks when the nominee collapsed, prompting Senate President Godswill Akpabio to end the screening.
Lawal was the second nominee to undergo screening and had completed his presentation to the lawmakers and was preparing to field questions when the incident occurred.
The Senate went into a closed-door session while efforts were being made to revive the nominee, who was still inside the chamber.
Lawal was nominated to replace the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, who was not screened and cleared by the Senate due to security reasons.
