The Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Friday, visited Governor Nyesom Wike in his private home in Port Harcourt.
Wike was a notable presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who was poised to win the primary election but lost in the last minutes due to what many described as the highest political power play in the history of PDP.
Sensing that he was not likely to win the primary election, Aminu Tambuwal announced that he was stepping down for Atiku Abubakar and called on his supporters to divert their votes to the former Vice President.
The votes from Tambuwal’s supporters went a long way to add up to the polls that earned Atiku victory as the party’s flag bearer.
The move came as a shocker to many who thought Tambuwal was stepping down for his close friend and staunch political ally, Nyesom Wike.
Very much unlike him, the very expressive Governor of Rivers State has not personally reacted to the move.
He quietly returned to his private home in Port Harcourt but has been inundated with endless streams of visitors comprising heavyweights across political parties.
The latest of the visitors is the former governor of Kano State and the presidential candidate of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Kwankwaso was accompanied to Rivers State by chieftains of his party and the PDP. They held meetings with Wike into Friday night.
Also present at the meeting were former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose; former Attorney General of the Federation, Bello Adoki, Chief Ferdinard Alabraba, and Senator Olaka Worgu, among others.
Kwankwaso’s visit is coming barely 48 hours after the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi also visited Wike in Port Harcourt.
Kwankwaso, just like his counterparts from other parties is searching for a suitable running mate ahead of the 2023 general elections.
There have been reports of the NNPP making consultations about a merger with the Labour Party.
The discussions have not produced the desired result as neither presidential candidate is willing to be the running mate of the other.
However, Kwankwaso’s meeting with Wike today might be an indication that he may be able to convince him to be his running mate.
