Men earlier this Thursday morning, dispersed a group of youths attempting to break into a major supermarket along the Zoo Road in the Kano state capital.
The suspects targeted the two-storey building housing Sadaraki Stores, trying to force their way in. However, before the arrival of security operatives, the suspects had already caused damage to the building by destroying its windows.
The police intervention quickly stalled the break-in, preventing further damage and potential looting. So far, the protest against hunger in the ancient city has seen low compliance, with many residents choosing to remain indoors.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had previously issued a warning on Wednesday, indicating that intelligence reports suggested that individuals with malicious intent were planning to hijack the protest.
The governor invited genuine protesters to the Government House in Kano while warning troublemakers to stay away from the state.
“The intelligence we have received points to evil-minded persons plotting to use the protest as a cover for unlawful activities,” Governor Yusuf stated.
He added, “I invite all genuine protesters to the Government House, but I warn those with ill intentions to steer clear of Kano.”
As the situation develops, the state government and law enforcement agencies remain vigilant, ensuring that the rights of peaceful protesters are protected while safeguarding public and private properties from potential harm.
