The authorities of the University of Benin, (UNIBEN), have shut down the 2 campuses of the institution – main campus, Ugbowo and Ekenwan campus.
The placard-bearing students, yesterday, 14the of September, round the school campuses and later blocked major roads of the ancient city of Benin in protest against the 20% hike in tuition fees.
They also protested the N20,000 penalty slammed on those who do not meet the payment deadlines of the fees.
The students caused major traffic gridlocks on the roads, especially the ever busy Benin-Lagos Highway.
Some of the students who spoke to newsmen said they decided to embark on the protests because they “could not bear the hike any longer.”
On its part, the authorities, this morning, 15th September, directed a total shut down of the campuses citing possible hijacking of the protests by hoodlums.
A memo titled ‘CLOSURE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN’ has been circulated to all the halls of residence as well as all faculties and departments.
CLOSURE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN
The Vice Chancellor has reviewed the agitation by a section of the students’ body today Tuesday 14th September, 2021.
After due consultation, and in the overall interest of the general students’ body, the Vice Chancellor has, on behalf of Senate, approved the closure of the University with immediate effect. This is based on security reports to avoid the students’ action being hijacked by hoodlums; and thereby prevent any form of breakdown of law and order within and outside the campuses of the University.
Accordingly, all students are to vacate the hostels and the University premises not later than 12 noon on Wednesday 15th, September, 2021.
Thank you.
