Justice Mary Odili has called for caution as the nation awaits the outcome of the election petitions currently before the presidential election tribunal.

Justice Odili made her observation during a colloquium and book launch in honour of Chief J K Gadzama upon his attainment of 25 years as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

In the video of the event circulating various social media platforms, Odili expressed her worries that there seem to be “moves to throw the nation into chaos or conflagration.”

She noted that that many are fanning the ambers of hatred, religion and tribalism without paying attention to the outcome of their actions.

Justice Odili noted that the pain of losing or being left with the short end of the stick, should not “justify bringing the roof down.” She added that the consequences may not spare the perpetrators.

She decried the situation where some of the perpetrators use their position of influence to negatively sway the minds of impressionable, underprivileged and hapless members of the society.

The retired bencher cautioned against blackmailing tribunal judges. She used the occasion to hail the prowess of the lead counsel for President Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, Wole Olanipekun whom she described as a master in electoral disputes, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the host of the occasion, Chief J K Gadzama.

Odili noted that with such people in Nigeria’s judicial landscape, “there will be a restoration of the ethos which the founding fathers had set in motion as guide irrespective of the positions we occupy in the society.”

The 2023 elections, which witnessed the emergence of President Tinubu, are currently under scrutiny as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and a few others challenge the results at the election tribunal. The development brings to light the immense pressure and scrutiny faced by the judiciary.
