Kaduna State University has hiked its tuition fees from N26,000 to N500,000 or non-indigenes of Kaduna State.
Many lament that the increase comes at a time when many families are reeling from the economic hardship brought on by #COVID19.
A press statement by the Kaduna State Students Union states that majority of the students come from poor backgrounds and will not be able to to afford the new fees.
They lament that many of the the students may drop out in spite of the fact that they may be on scholarship.
A letter was addressed by the students to Governor Nasir El-Rufai but reports say, there is no response yet.
However, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Adamu Nuhu Bargo told NAN in a statement that the decision for an upward review in tuition fees was to raise money for the university.
Bargo added that the institution has an annually generated revenue of N765.9 million and that the management had met with the students. According to him, specific fees for each course is yet to be announced.
A medical student and former Kaduna State University Students Union president, Abdulrazak Shuaibu confirmed the exact courses to which the increment has been made.
Shuaibu told NAN that students in the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences will pay N150,000 instead of the past sum of N26,000 while students of the Faculty of Medicine will pay N300,000 for indigenes and N500,000 for non-indigenes as against N24,000
The university management defended the increases saying it was aimed at creating a “more conducive atmosphere of learning for staff and students.”
