The Kano State Police Command has disclosed that the explosion which rocked the state last week was actually caused by a bomb.
There was commotion last Tuesday at Aba Road in the Sabon Gari area of the state after a loud explosion was heard close to a school, killing 1 person instantly and leaving scores injured.
Hours after the tragedy, the state Police Commissioner announced that the incident was a gas explosion and not a bomb blast as reported in various news media.
However, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Haruna Kiyawa on Monday, the state police command said the blast was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and not a gas cylinder.
Kiyawa said an investigation carried out by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense, EOD-CBRN, and Operation Puff Adder of the Nigerian Police indicated that the incident was a bomb blast.
He added that preliminary investigations revealed that one of the nine victims of the explosion was a dealer in the illicit storage of toxic chemicals and other hazardous materials.
The statement reads in part; “A preliminary investigation revealed that among the nine victims of the explosion, one of them dealt in illicit storage of toxic chemicals and other hazardous materials.
“He was later identified as Michael Adejo (now late). Items recovered at the scene include five bottles of different brands of Acidic Liquid, three bags of Potassium substance, one Jeri can of mixed chemicals, six and a half cartons of Snuff (Tobacco) and five drums of Polymer (Chemical).”
