Kidnapped Methodist Prelate Reveals Negotiations that Resulted in His Freedom

The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Samuel Kanu Uche who was kidnapped while travelling on Sunday, confirmed that ransom was paid for his freedom.

The clergyman confirmed this during a television interview on Tuesday,

Samuel Kanu-Uche was kidnapped by unknown gunmen along with his Chaplain and the Bishop of Owerri, Dennis Mark.

The Christian clerics were abducted along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway in Umunneochi LGA of Abia state.

By Monday, their abductors demanded the sum of N100 million to set them free. Dr Michael O. Akinwale, secretary of the conference, in a statement, acknowledged the kidnappers’ demand, stating that the church is appealing to parishioners to rise and help.

Within 24 hours however, reports emerged that Prelate Kanu Uche was released. There were public enquiries about the possibility of a ransom being paid for the release of the prelate.

Speaking, however, at a press conference in Lagos today, the Prelate himself confirmed that funds were raised and arranged in five sacks as ransom for his freedom.

He disclosed that the sum of N20 million arranged in five different sacks, totalling N100 million was raised by the Methodist church in Nigeria.

He also stated that neither the Federal, State Government, the military or police intervened in his predicament.

The Methodist Church of Great Britain is a ProtestantChristian denomination in Britain, and the mother church to Methodists worldwide. 

It participates in the World Methodist Council, and the World Council of Churches among other ecumenical associations.
