Kidnappers of Greenfield University Students Demand N800 Million Ransom

Kidnappers of a yet to be confirmed number of students of Greenfield University have demanded an N800 million ransom before they can be released.

Reports say that they contacted the parents of the students threatening to the captives if their demands are not met.

Gunmen are reported to have stormed Greenfield University located along the Abuja-Kaduna highway at about 10:30pm, Tuesday night on motorbikes. Their visit resulted in commotion, leaving one at least person dead and injuring several before

A report by a cousin of one of the abducted students, Georgina Stephen revealed that the abductors have contacted the parents and made a collective demand of N800 million for all the kidnapped students.

Stephen said that 23 students, including 14 females and a staff of the university were abducted.

She added that the kidnappers have been beating the abducted students, insisting that the students will be killed if the ransom is not paid.

A parent who spoke on conditions of anonymity about the development also confirmed that they have been contacted by the kidnappers who want them to pay the N800 million ransom. However, he could not confirm the number of students involved.

The Nation newspaper reports that negotiations of the ransom was already ongoing.

On its part, the Kaduna State Government speaking through the Commissioner for Internal Security and home Affair, Samuel Aruwan confirmed the kidnap attack on Greenfield University.

He said that a staff of the school identified as Paul Ude Okafor was killed during the attack but the number of students kidnapped by the gunmen is yet to be ascertained.

Aruwan disclosed on Wednesday that troops of Operation Thunder Strike (OPTS) and other security operatives were promptly dispatched to the school as soon as a distress call was received.

He added that security operatives have commenced an investigation into the matter and are working to ensure the safe return of the students.
