Labour Party Discloses Source of Funding, APC, PDP Decline, Give Reasons

The calls for registered parties to make public, their source of funding has been heeded by the the Labour Party.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party have declined the calls, 18 days to the effective kickoff of the presidential campaigns.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier stated that campaigns for the presidential election in 2023 will commence on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

Section 88 of the Electoral Act, 2022 has also restricted presidential candidates to spending nothing more than N5bn on campaign activities.

Also, the sum an individual or entity can donate to any of the candidates is statutorily not expected to exceed N50m.

While speaking on the source of the funds in an interview with Punch, the Media and Publicity for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga said their strategy of raising funds for Tinubu’s campaign is not for media consumption.

He noted that the fundraising committee when put in place would be able to answer the question of how the funds were raised.

The Media Adviser to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Paul Ibe while reacting to how his principal would raise funds said he would raise money in line with the constitution.

He further stated that the former vice president will comply with whatever provision the Electoral Act and the constitution spell out in raising funds for the campaign.

The Atiku Campaign Council spokesperson, Daniel Bwala, while speaking in the same context noted that the question should be directed toward INEC.

On his part, the spokesman for the Peter Obi Support Network, Onwuasoanya Jones, revealed that Nigerians have started donating to the Obidient movement to actualise Peter Obi’s presidential ambition.

According to Jones, He added that the candidate would not spend up to the N5bn stipulated by the Electoral Act for the 2023 election.

Jones further stated that Obi’s supporters are working towards raising N1bn for his campaign.
