Lagos State Doctors to Commence Strike on Monday

News - Women's Perspective

Doctors employed by the Lagos State government have resolved to commence a 3-day warning strike on Monday, 13th July.

This is in view of government’s failure to meet their demands. This is in spite an additional 2 weeks’s grace given the government after an initial warning strike.

The planned action was announced on Sunday by the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Medical Guild, Dr Oluwajimi Sodipo.

The doctors have resolved to commence the strike following the expiration of the ultimatum given to the State Government. The doctors cited the wage disparity between them and Federal employed doctors as one of the issues they expected the government to address.

To make it worse, some of other doctors are disengaged without adequate compensation. Sodipo added tat doctors working at isolation centres have not been paid salaries for 2 months.

In his press statement, he said that:

“Following the emergency congress of the Medical Guild held on June 27, we resolved that the previous 21 days ultimatum given to the  government be extended by a further 2 weeks during which representative council meeting should be held to review the resolution of the congress and activate the three-day warning strike if 70% of the Guild’s demands are not met.

Oluwajimi Sodipo added that;

“The issue of COVID19 hazard allowance and inducement allowance MOU approved by the federal government to her doctors have not been approved by the Lagos State government to her doctors.

Speaking on the plight of doctors working at covid19 isolation centres Sodipo lamented that the “are still being owed 2 months salaries which have remained unpaid at the moment.

“They are also being unceremoniously disengaged without recourse to their welfare.

The issue of shortage of doctors in our health facilities are yet to be resolved and with no substantive action taken by the state government to resolve the issue.”
