Lawmakers Promise 2-month Salaries for Covid-19 Relief Effort Gets Nigerians Enraged

Lawmakers Demand Toyota Camry 2020 Full Option, Promise 2-month Salaries for Covid-19 Relief

News - Women's Perspective

Lawmakers in the Federal House of Representatives have volunteered their 2-months salaries for covid-19 relief efforts.

Only recently, there were reports that the legislators took delivery of brand new Toyota Camry 2020 full option series.

The public has requested the lawmakers to specify which of their salaries or remunerations they are volunteering.

Would it be their basic monthly salary of N165,434.40 as prescribed by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal commission ? Is it the gross monthly salary of N794,068.83. Would it also be the controversial constituency alliance of N12 million per month ?

The lawmakers ‘s promise of 2-month salary donations has further enraged Nigerians who query reasons they went for luxury cars as utility vehicles when the masses are suffering.

Indeed, trending on Twitter since Thursday is “#Toyota Camry 2020” where Nigerians vent their anger on the apparent greed and selfishness of those in authority:

@drolufunmilayo for instance says:

Yesterday we read news of 360 lawmakers getting luxury 2020 Toyota Camry- each one of them. Each car is 30,000 dollars.

But in that same country, 43 federal ministers donate total of 10,000 dollars.”  “3.6 million naira is less than 10,000 dollars. Or maybe about 10,000 dollars.

“Everytime you hear some piece of news and you think about it, you just know that we are not really serious as a country.
These people earn crazy money in terms of allowances- far more than “basic” salary.
But they want to sharply play us a fast one.
Team Sinzu. Ijoba Spending.”
Each of the luxury Camry cars costs about $35,000 or N13.5 million. Sadly despite the many protests and even a lawsuit by SERAP about the motive for such lavish amount of money, it is alleged that the lawmakers still went on to procure the vehicles.
Reports also have have it that the 360 members of House of Representatives have each collected whooping sums of money as car loans. This is in line with the Federal Government monetisation policy that does not permit them to be given official cars.
The lawmakers’ promise of 2-month salaries further infuriated Nigerians when the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning in its official Twitter handle, begged a foreign business man, Elon Musk for help.

A staff of the ministry appealed to Musk to give Nigeria between 100 and 500 ventilators. The medical equipment costs about $10,000 each and is urgently needed to treat covid-19 patients.
