The Lekki axis of Lagos is known for perennial flooding every rainy season.
Areas affected annually include, Agungi, Victoria Garden City, Oniru, Sangotedo. Park Lane area of Ikoyi is not spared either.
The sprawling Estates in these axis are home to Nigeria’s rich and famous. They woke up this morning to torrential rains that have hampered vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Yours truly lives in one of those and only recently relocated from an upland part of the mainland. I refuse to be surprised or amused to know that some residents actually have fun boats and speed boats parked within their yards for seasons such as this.
It was fun to see them cruise around this morning. The poorer residents that must go out, either trekked or took canoes out of their house.
Equally curious is the fact that miscreants are actually doing business catching fishes in the Lekki floods. This is more so as corporate security guards have taken refuge away from the rains, leaving the big boys to their fate.
One of the security guards spoken to says he cannot get drowned just to secure “Oga dem ! How much dem day pay me sef ? If I die, all dis oga dem go bring moni bury me ? Abeg, 2nd base madam !”
Indeed, nearly everyone who lives in Lekki invests in one brand of SUV or another. Seeing them all, in the mornings, one wonders if it is a status symbol, but far from it ! They stock up on the vehicles for floods such as today’s.
In some cases, even the SUVs get swept away by the floods. Notwithstanding, many more palatial hoses and estates still keep spinning up.
Having lived in Lagos for decades, it is advisable to shop for real estates in the rainy season as estate agents will never fully describe the situation if at all.
Other parts of Lagos affected by the floods are caused by residents who empty their waste or nylon packages in drainages channels.
They include: Agbara, Yaba, Aguda – Surulere, Awoyaya, Badore, Ojodu, Berger ,Abraham adesanya, Mushin, Eleko, Jakande etc.
The situation is even more worrisome with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The floods could spread the virus as far as people’s houses and to areas where it could wreck unimaginable catastrophic havoc.
