The Lagos State Government has owned up to calling the Army to help curb the #LekkiToll Gate #EndSARS protests.
The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Gboyega Akosile, said this in reaction to claims by the Nigerian Army that it deployed its troops on the request of the government.
The Army however, maintains that its troops did not fire bullets at the peaceful #EndSARS protesters gathered at the toll gate on the night of the 20th of October.
Akosile told the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday that there there is nothing wrong with calling in the Army to intervene considering the imminent lawlessness and anarchy.
Akosile added that the statement from the Military made it clear that its men did not shoot at the protesters but followed strictly, the rule of engagement.
While owning up to the government calling in the army to help, he said that, “the angle should actually be that the military has come out to deny that they shot at anybody. There has been the accusation saying that they shot, they killed.
“If you read that statement very well, the Army is saying that they did not shoot at civilians and that what they did, followed strictly, the rule of engagement.
“And then, if you read the statement very well, the angle of Lagos State Government, you will understand.
“There is nothing wrong to say, lawlessness, anarchy has come and the military should be called to intervene. There is nothing wrong there.”
Politician and Lawyer, Femi Fani Kayode says that the Nigerian Army claims that the Lagos “asked for soldiers to be deployed at Lekki.”
Both claims appear to differ from Sanwo-Olu’s responses to CNN in this interview. He appears not be sure if it was the Nigerian Army that showed up at the scene of #LekkiMassarce.
