The Nigerian Senate today, July 14th, passed a bill which prescribed life imprisonment for kidnappers. The penalty was a 10-year maximum prison sentence.
Sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Lagos Central Senatorial District, the bill is titled’ “a bill for an act to amend the Criminal Code Act CAP.C.38, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.”
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele twitted the development this morning:
If passed into law, the will delete the statute of limitation on defilement, increase punishment for kidnap offenders and eliminated gender restrictions for offences of rape and other related matters.”
By removing gender restrictions to the offence, it states that men could be raped just like women. The bill also removes the time frame for reporting and prosecuting rape cases and defilement. It therefore removes the current time of 2 months allowing for as many years as a victim summons courage to report.
While the upper legislative chamber proposes life imprisonment for kidnappers, some states already passed laws in recent that address the offence.
Lagos State Kidnapping Prohibition Law 2019, punishes kidnapping, where a ransom is demanded for hostages with a 25-year jail term.
Section 2(2)of the law stipulates that offenders are punishable by death if hostages die in their custody.
