Popular Nollywood actor, Baba Ijesha may face life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor.
Lagos State Government, on Tuesday, recommended the prosecution of Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha under 5 provisions of Criminal Laws of the state.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi while announcing his arrest, and speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Police Command, said that the actor has been in police custody for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl since she was 7.
The police statement:
“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested on Olanrawaju James ‘male’ 48, aka Baba Ijesha, popular Nollywood actor for defiling a minor.
“The case of defilement was reported on 19th April, 2021 by one Princess Ademola Adekanya ‘female’ at Sabo Police Station and transferred to the Gender Unit of the State CID, Panti, Yaba Lagos for proper investigation.
“Based on preliminary findings, the suspect started assaulting the victim, 14 years, since she as 7 years old. The suspect confessed to the crime and was also captured by CCTV camera in the house of the complainant.
The state Attorney-General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, in a statement released on Tuesday, said that baba Ijesha will be charged under the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
Among the charges are:
- Indecent Treatment of a child which is punishable by 7 years imprisonment
- Defilement of a Child which is punishable by life imprisonment.
- Sexual Assault by Penetration also punishable by life imprisonment.
- Attempted Sexual Assault by Penetration, punishable by 14 years imprisonment
- Sexual Assault which is punishable by three years imprisonment
The statement:
“Whilst the State would ensure that Mr Olanrewaju James’s rights as enshrined in the Constitution are upheld, the Ministry of Justice would not relent in its efforts in ensuring that whoever sexually abuses any resident of Lagos State is speedily brought to book.
“It is instructive to note that the Lagos State Ministry of Justice has been consistent in its efforts in protecting the vulnerable in our society and since the establishment of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team in 2014, it has to date prosecuted over 800 cases of Domestic and Sexual Offences.
“The Attorney-General hereby assures Lagosians and indeed Nigerians that in accordance with the DDP’s advise, charges would be filed accordingly.”
