Nigeria’s reggae Maestro, guitarist and singer, Majekodunmi Fasheke, better known by his stage name as Majek Fashek is dead.
His manager, Omenka Uzoma made the announcement in a video posted on Majek Fashek’s official instagram page this morning.
According to Uzoma, “It is true that the African legendary icon has gone to be with the Lord, his maker.
“I would say we should celebrate his achievements, he has done a lot for Nigeria and for Nigerians. Whatever the family decides, I will get to you. This is all I have to say for now.”
Majek Fashek died at the age of 58.
He was popular for his 1988 song ‘Send down the rain’ which resonated across Africa for many years. The song was released in the year when the rains were late in coming and agricultural produce dwindled. By coincidence, after the song was released, the rains cam down in torrents across the country.
Africans thereafter tagged him as the ‘rainmaker.’
Majek Fashek took seriously ill in 2019 and was flown to England for treatment. There were insinuations that his ailment was related to drug overuse as he became really frail and could hardly walk without support.
His manager appealed for financial assistance as he complained after a while that the bills had drained him of his finances. According to Uzoma, he footed the singer’s upkeep largely on his own.
