The Lagos State Fire Service has raised an alarm over a major leakage of petrol at the Iyana-Odo on Atlas Cove-Mosimi System 2B pipeline.
The information was given by Mrs Margaret Adeseye, Acting Head of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service this morning.
She however assured that men of the State Fire Service were swiftly mobilised to the scene. This was as soon as they received a distress call at about 5:41am fromm neighbouring Peace Estate, Isheri after Petrocam Bus Stop.
Adeyeye added that petrol also known as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was gushing out of the pipeline linking Isheri to Igando and environs in the Alimosho area of Lagos.
According to her, the NNPC pumping operations have been suspended while men of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are working with Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to avert any major disaster.
Margaret Adeseye has also warned members of the public, particularly residents within the axis to avoid any naked flame pending the conclusion of repair works by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
Earlier on the 21st of July, 2 major fire tragedies were averted at about 4:40am and 5:14am respectively at Ozumba Mbadiwe Street and Alakuko Bus Stop on Lagos Abeokuta Expressway.
A 33,000-litre truck conveying PMS from a private depot in Apapa to Enyo Petrol Station at Ajah developed a mechanical fault tilting the tank and spilling its contents.
Fire men from Lekki Phase 1 were promptly drafted to the scene to blanket the petrol leakage with chemical foam. The remaining contents of the tanker were transloaded to another vehicle.
The Alakuko incident involved another 33:000-litre tanker that lost control while negotiating a bend near the toll gate. The tanker rolled over equally spilling tis contents. However, a major disaster was averted by men of the Agege Fire Station.
