Mammoth Crowd at NIMC Office Today as the Nation Grapples with Covid19 2nd Wave

Coronavirus Pandemic

There was a mammoth crowd at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) office in Lagos today as people struggle to beat the NIN registration deadline.

Federal Government has given 14 days for everyone to get the National Identity Number (NIN).

This is in spite of the state government’s efforts to curb the rising cases of covid19 as the country is beginning to experience a second wave.

An applicant said she was there as early as 5:00am and still was not able to make much progress.

Government measures and safety guidelines were not adhered to by the surging crowd as everyone defied the protocols to get to the end of the queues.

Reports say the stamped was particularly scary as many turned up without face masks.

By afternoon however, government officials are said to have closed down the premises to avert a major catastrophe.

Over the weekend, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the closure of public places that are known to attract mass gatherings.

On Saturday night, the State Task Force led by the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu stormed the Ikeja GRA complex of Cubana grills and nightclub and shut it down for defying the ban.

The governor himself has been down with the disease and certainly speaks from an empirical point of view.

Several isolation centres had been closed down as the state appeared to have significantly battled the disease over the months.

Sadly, with today’s mammoth crowd at the NIMC office, little hope is left at stemming the numbers.
