A man named Olupelumi Fagboyegun has cried out against what he describes as unlawful and indefinite detention by the Chief Judge of Ondo State for visiting his father’s house.
According to him, he has been living abroad for the past 30 years and only came home three years ago to visit his father’s house.
The Chief Judge who is also a senior pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Hon Justice O O Akeredolu ordered his arrest and clamped him in detention.
According to the man, he left his children overseas to visit Nigeria on holiday and he is a single parent.
He adds that he was “arrested at my father’s house, I was locked up, I was charged with forceful entry into my father’s house.”
He laments that “even if I was convicted of this crime, it only carries one year prison penalty,” but he has been remanded and abandoned in jail for three years.
Fagboyegun said that “they have changed judges five times. They have reassigned me five times. They have changed their charges five times. This case is still pending… on the 15th of February 2021.”
He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief Justice and Attorney General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to help him so he can return to his children overseas.
Nigerians, including renowned lawyer and activist, Femi Fani-Kayode has appealed to the the Governor of Ondo State to look into the case and set him free.
The Governor of Ondo State has also intervened in a message posted this afternoon.
According to Governor Arakunrin Akeredolu@RotimiAkeredoluยท “I have instructed my AG to investigate the allegation. We will ensure the investigation is thorough, fair and transparent.”
The Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir Charles Titiloye has, immediately ordered and investigation into the case and bring all culprits to book.
