Zindzi Mandela, daughter of anti-apartheid leaders, Nelson and Winnie Mandela has died at the age of 59.
Her death was announced by the South African Department of international Relations and Cooperation. Zindzi herself, a freedom fighter, is described as having served her country selflessly.
Minister of International Relations, Naledi Pandor, said that “Zindzi will not only be remembered as a daughter of our struggle heroes, Tata Nelson and Mama Winnie Mandela, but as a struggle heroine in her own right. She served South Africa well.
Zindzi was the Mandela’s youngest daughter. She died at a Johannesburg hospital on Monday, July 13th.
The course of her death is not yet known, however, the ministry promised to make it public once the information is available.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his condolences in a statement. According to him, “I offer my deep condolences to the Mandela family as we mourn the passing of a fearless political activist who was a leader in her own right.
“Our sadness is compounded by this loss being visited upon us just days before the world marks the birthday of the great Nelson Mandela,” Ramaphosa said.
