There was chaos on Sunday after scores of gunmen stormed St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Iwo, the hometown of Governor Akeredolu in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Eyewitnesses say there were, in addition to the shooting, explosions within the church premises which also killed several people and injured many more.
One of the eyewitnesses, Kehinde Ogunkorode told Daily Post that the incident caused chaos in the vicinity.
He stated that residents ran for their lives as they were caught off guard.
Another report specified that 50 dead bodies were counted immediately after the attack within the church.
Narrating the incident, a source told Sunday Tribune, that some gunmen invaded the church during service, and opened fire on members killing no fewer than 50 people. He added that the congregation was caught unawares.
The source stated that the casualty might rise as some worshippers who were taken to the hospital died either on the way or shortly on arrival.
He added that the gunmen also used explosives within the church premises but said most of the people were hit by gunshots.
The perpetrators were said to have fled the scene immediately they carried out the killing.
A nurse at the hospital who spoke with journalists on conditions of anonymity said they did not have enough medical personnel on duty to attend to the injured at the emergency unit of the hospital.
