Unfortunately, the state government denies that the deaths are all connected to covid-19. The claims are however, difficult to ascertain considering that there is no single functional testing centre in the entire state.

This online news media yesterday quoted the coordinator of the state covid-19 response team, Dr Sabitu Shu’aibu as saying that they haven’t started testing patients because testing kits have not been received into the state.

Emergency calls, according to him, can also not be taken since they are not equipped to handle them until hopefully, this morning, 26th of April.

On his part, his colleague, Tidjani Hussain said the NCDC centre at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is currently on lockdown as it was being fumigated. It will remain locked for 72 hours, he said.

However, in just 2 days of testing, 44 persons retuned positive to covid-19 sparking fears that more mass deaths are in the offing. A total of 489 cases have been sent to Abuja and 74 returned positive.

An apparently shaken Governor Abdullahi Ganduje lamented the situation and called for Federal government’s assistance.

He added that suspected case samples are subjected to a 7-hour journey to Abuja. The long trip causes them to have wasted samples and request for a repeat of some sample taking.

According to him, “as the situation gets serious, we are surely on top of it, but this requires putting up a testing machine in Kano by the Federal government.

“We are appealing to the federal government as they support Lagos and Ogun States also come to the rescue of Kano state quickly.
