Meeting Hits Deadlock as ASUU/Federal Government Imbroglio Continues

News - Women's Perspective

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Ministry of Labour meeting hit a deadlock today as neither party agreed to shift ground.

The Federal Government represented by the Ministry of Labour and Employment said it does not have the money to meet the financial demands of members of the union.

ASUU is asking for the release of N110 billion for the revitalisation of the education sector.

The Federal Government was only able to release N20 billion two weeks ago.

The union also requested that the payment of N30 billion Earned Academic Allowance be for its members alone.

A total of N50 billion has so far been released to the striking lecturers which they maintain is a far cry from what they are demanding from the Federal Government.

These form some of the issues discussed at the meeting between both parties on Wednesday.

Chairman of ASUU has however requested that a state of emergency be declared on the education sector if it is to eventually become the bedrock of development in the country.

Issues in contention at last week’s meeting:
  • Revitalisation of the university system
  • Earned Academic Allowance
  • Integration Personnel Payrol System

Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment told reporters at the end of the meeting that the Federal Government team will meet on Friday to revisit all the issues.

Some students however, believe that a little generosity from the salaries of the country’s lawmakers will go a long way to settling the funds requested by the lecturers.
