Mixed reactions have trailed the recent award of first class honours degree to 201 graduates of the 2019/2020 academic session by the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State
In the 15th convocation ceremony which held on Friday and tagged “The Release of Eagles,” Vice Chancellor, Prof Abiodun Adebayo announced that Miss Paula-Peace Onyinyechi, a graduate of Biochemistry Department, College of Sciences emerged as best graduation student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98.
While many regret the vindictive systems in the schools they graduated from which sought to stifle merit and good performance, others believe it is not possible to post so much excellent performances by one university.
Ayò-Bánkólé Akíntújoyè@AyoBankole· “This covenant university & first class grads debate reminds me of a prof in UI who told us “I will frustrate you to fail, and you will FAAAIIILLL”. He made many cry. He was highly revered & later became the DVC Academics. Public education in Nigeria adore sadism. A failed system.495191.4K.”
Ade@the_Adebimpe_· “Covenant University producing first class students, making it easier for them to qualify for good jobs and opportunities . My department hasn’t produced a first class student since 1407… Maybe after I left sha, greatest gbogbo.”
Ayodele Samuel@iam_SamDon· “Covenant University still remains the best higher Institution in Nigeria if you want anything that’s close to quality education.”
Dr. Dípò Awójídé@OgbeniDipo “Nothing wrong with 201 out of 1,664 Covenant University students graduating with a First Class degree. What is wrong is having 30% of a cohort graduating with a 2.2 & 60% graduating with a 3rd class degrees. The mentality of a lot of people have been messed up by the system.
“I have taught International Strategic Management, a final year module for 5 years. Consistently, 75% of the students (usually 150-200 students) have achieved a First Class or a 2.1 grade in all 5 years. If majority of your students fail, then, the module or teaching is crap.
“This notion that you have to suffer and nearly lose your mind before you achieve something great is a stupid mentality and mindset. If you have such mentality and mindset, fix it. Getting a degree should not be a walk in the park. But it also shouldn’t be mentally draining.
“There has to be a positive correlation between teaching and learning, assessment and outcomes. If success attainment and achievement rate is low, then, the lecturer(s), course team and the whole department should be questioned. NUC, Federal and State Uni, please change”
Among the graduates of the 2019/2020 academic session is a 66-year-old man.
“My dad inspires me. I love how he is constantly dreaming new dreams. Thinking new things. Relentlessly going after all his heart desire. Thank you daddy for constantly practice what you preach.”
