News - Women's Perspective

A video footage has emerged online showing the moment Uduak Akpan, the first accused in the murder of a job seeker and graduate of the University of Uyo, Iniubong Umoren, attempted to escape shortly after he was sentenced to death.

Earlier on Thursday, Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court sentenced Akpan to death by hanging for the murder of the late female graduate.

The accused was also sentenced to life imprisonment on the charge of rape preferred against him.

After the court ruling, Akpan attempted to flee but it took the intervention of the police and prison guards to stop him from escaping.

However, the court discharged and acquitted his father, Frank Akpan and sister, Anwan Akpan, the second and third accused, who were standing trial for accessory after the fact to murder.

In April 2021, Umoren was murdered and buried in a shallow grave while she was job-hunting.

She was also reported to have sought the job while awaiting her NYSC mobilization.

Akpan is said to have lured the victim by inviting her for a job interview.

On arrival, he raped, murdered her and buried the corpse in a shallow grave.

His compound is said to have been littered with similar graves while his room had clothes, books and shoes of people suspected to have also been murdered by him in similar circumstances.

After the killing Umoren, he took refuge in his sisters house in Calabar in a bid to assist him to escape justice as investigations narrowed in on him as possible culprit.

The suspect was however arrested and paraded by the Nigerian police after he confessed that he murdered Umoren after an argument broke out between them.

Meanwhile, the court discharged and acquitted his father, Frank Akpan and sister, Anwan Akpan, the second and third accused, who were standing trial for accessory after the fact to murder.
