A recent review by the Special Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Education, Castro Ezama has revealed that more than 60% of secondary school girls in Cross River State are not virgins.
Ezama gave the statistics during an interview programme with FAD FM Radio in Calabar, the State capital while speaking on efforts at improving the standard of education in the State.
According to him, there was a high level of promiscuity and permissiveness amongst the students in Cross River State. “50 or 60% of girls in our secondary schools are not virgins. And this is not good for the image of the state and of education.
Responding, a councillor representing Ward 7 in Bakassi Local Government Area, Grace Bassey that such a statement is demeaning of the girl child.
Bassey said that it was totally unfair to exclude the boy child in such a study as it further highlighted the sexual issues and discrimination the girl child faces.
According to her, the statement was “totally unacceptable and should be condemned.”
