Muhammed Umar has been appointed the new Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission by President Muhammadu Buhari.
His appointment follows the suspension of the immediate past Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu over allegations of corruption.
Prior to his appointment, Muhammed Umar was the Head of Operations at the anti-graft agency. A Deputy Commissioner of Police, he was the second most senior operative of the commission. A staff of the agency, who prefers anonymity told the Naws agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Umar was chosen as new acting boss by the “EFCC HIERACHY.”
Prior to the suspension of Magu, there were also speculations that the next most senior staff, Ola Olukayode would take his place. Unfortunately, he is not in the core operations unit, being a civilian.
Another person fingered for the position prior to the announcement of Muhammed Umar, is the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Bala Ciroma. Specuations are all rive that Ciroma may emerge as the substantive chairman.
There are also indications that Ibrahim Magu’s suspension has not been officially communicated to the anti-graft agency.
However, he is reported to have vacated his official residence and cleared his office of personal belongings.
