The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and celebrity barman, Cubana Chief Priest, have agreed to settle out of court after a naira abuse case was slammed against the socialite.
The update was given at the resumed court hearing on Thursday.
EFCC had dragged Cubana Chief Priest to court over allegations of naira abuse but the socialite was granted a ₦10 million bail after he pleaded not guilty to the charges at the Federal High Court in Lagos on April 17.
The EFCC arraigned him before Justice Kehinde Ogundare on three counts bordering on abuse of naira, spraying, and tampering with the nation’s currency at a social event contrary to the provisions of the Central Bank Act of 2007.
Appearing for the defendant, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN) told Justice Kehinde Ogundare that they have agreed with the EFCC to settle out of court and in light of the reconciliatory spirit, they also withdrew the notice of preliminary objection to enable them explore settlement.
The counsel to the defendant added that they have looked at evidence, and in accordance with Section 14(2) of the EFCC Establishment Act, they can compound offences in the interest of justice.
The lawyer for the prosecution, Bilikisu Buhari ESQ. confirmed the receipt of the application of the defense adding that the application is still being considered.
The defendant’s counsel suggested June 5th for the report of settlement, subject to the court’s overriding confidence.
Justice Ogundare agreed to the date for the hearing of the report of settlement.
