Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Optimistic about WTO Top Job

Nigeria’s former Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has remained consistently optimised about landing the WTO top Job.

Top picks for the job besides her, is another woman, Kenya’s former foreign Minister who holds the country’s Sports, Culture and Heritage Ministry, Amina Mohamed as well as candidates from Egypt, South Korea, Mexico, Moldova and Britain.

Nominations closed Wednesday, July 8th.

Speaking to ‘Newsnight Nigeria,’ Okonjo-Iweala said she is looking for passionate volunteers who would assist her campaign for the job. According to her, she does not have the funds to pay a Public Relations firm or lobbyists the way other candidates may be doing.

Optimistic about her chances, she added that:

“so far things are going well and I’m grateful for the support of the government and Nigerians. I don’t have any PR firm working for me. I have some friends who are helping with media work pro-bono because I cannot afford to pay them. It would be nice to have some volunteers.”

When asked about her qualification for the WTO job, Okonjo-Iweala declared that “I am the best woman for the job.” She listed her qualifications to include decades of expertise as a development economist with extensive hands-ons in trade. She also cited her leadership skills as a pragmatic consensus builder and global network of associates, friends and partners which position her as the best candidate for the job.

In a video monitored on her Twitter and Facebook pages, the world economist and development expert said the WTO has become more important than ever.

She urged the world to come together and trade to build a better society.

According to her,
