Nigeria Labour Congress Rejects Plans to Slash Salaries

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected plans by the Federal Government to slash the salaries of government workers.

Speaking on Wednesday, NLC President, Ayuba Wabba said said the plans would amount to “mass suicide.”

According to him, it was extremely horrendous for the Federal Government, through the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, to unilaterally slash salaries of civil servants.

The Minister, had on Wednesday, announced plans to effect a pay parity across all government ministries and parastatals.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning@FinMinNigeria· said that “What @NigeriaGov hopes to achieve is to redistribute wages equally across board. On his part, Ayuba Wabba worried that, “The question now is which salary is the government planning to slash ? It certainly cannot be the minimum wage of N30,000 which right now, cannot even buy a bag of rice.”

He added that workers are barely managing to stay alive by the paltry wages they earn. He requested that government should rather seek to slash the humongous remunerations and allowances earned by political office holders.
