Nigerians on and off social media have expressed concern about the quality of the new Naira notes compared to the old ones.
While the colours come off easily when wiped and wash off when in contact with water, currency counterfeiters already churned out millions.
A Twitter user identified as Chinaza once raised an alarm after her sister mistakingly left a few notes in her trouser pockets and washed them.
She discovered that the colours on the paper notes had washed away by the time she found them.
Horrified, she tweeted that: “So my sis forgot the new currency in her pocket and washed, this is what it turned out to ! If rain drenches you and this money is your only hope, you’d be stranded,” she wrote.
Another concerned Nigerian decided to wipe the N500 and the N200 notes with a soft tissue paper and was horrified to see the colours come off.
Sadly however, within days of its unveiling, millions of fake N1000 notes were produced and some about to go into circulation.
Luckily the fake currency trafficker was intercepted by men of the NDLEA with the wads of notes concealed in several boxes of noodles.
Wale Adedayo tweeted: “9.8 million naira worth of Fake Naira Notes. Nigerians are the enemies of Nigeria.”
A visit to the markets sadly, reveal that traders outrightly reject the new legal tender.
A fact-finding visit to the popular Ajah Market by this media outlet saw nearly all the market women saying that, “my sister, we never begin accept the new money. fake too plenty.”
It is uncertain when the legal tender will begin to be trusted especially with the deadline for the circulation of the old notes in about 31 days.
