"Gist"

Nkechi Blessing’s husband Falegan David Opeyemi has protested after the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Nigeria took down the scam alert post it published last week against against him.

UNICEF Nigeria had distanced itself from the fundraising Falegan was holding on its behalf. The organization had described the fundraising as a “scam”.

In various reactions for the past 4 days, Falegan shared videos of the donations and the schedule of remittance to the international organisation.

He took to his social media to insist that the fundraising was for UNICEF and that he had raised £61 to be donated to UNICEF’s relief efforts in Ukraine.

On Monday, April 12, the Nigerian branch of UNICEF deleted the scam alert post and stated:

An update about fundraising activities for UNICEF

We are aware that funds can be raised for UNICEF with the Instagram feature that allows users to raise funds for an organization of their choice. However, no aspect of the fundraiser should include an unauthorized promotion, support, or fundraising for another organization.

We discourage intended or unintended affiliations with organizations we do not have a partnership with.

In instances where this occurs, UNICEF can issue an alert through our office in the country where the unauthorized activity took place or where the organization operates in.

Note: We have taken down the post with the scam alert as the fundraising activity in question has been discontinued.

Thank you.
@unicef”

In his reaction, Falegan Opeyemi responded: “Sorry not accepting this.
