The President of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Doctor Ojinmah Uche, has revealed that the main motivation overseas for Nigerian-trained medical doctors is the disparity in salaries.
He stated that in some foreign countries, trainee Doctors earn as much as £40,000 in a year when in Nigeria, trainee Doctors earn a mere N3.6 million yearly.
He explained that in summary, a trainee doctor abroad can make within one month, what a trainee doctor in Nigeria makes in one year.
Dr Uche added that poverty is one of the push factors which has continued to motivate doctors in Nigeria to travel out of the country in search of a better life. He said that the pull factors are those things in foreign countries which is beyond Nigeria’s control that lure Nigerian doctors to those climes.
