The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bassey Ewah has confirmed that no policeman is allowed to search through anyone’s phone without a warrant.
He urged Nigerians not to hand in their phones at checkpoints especially if the officer has no warrant to scroll trough it.
The Deputy Commissioner made this known while speaking on Wednesday, 10th of November, during a question and answer session.
Ewah was addressing participants at the just concluded program organised by the Police Community Relation Committee.
He added that police officers carrying out an investigation would present a search warrant before asking for any person’s phone.
The police boss urged Nigerians not to submit their phones to any officer who does not present a search warrant.
According to him, “I stand to be corrected; please do not give any policeman who stopped you on the checkpoint your phones; its not our schedule.
“If we are investigating you, we will present a warrant and then demand your phone. Please take note.”
