The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is considered for suspension for 2 years.
The proposal was made by the Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) led by Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo in letter submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The letter, among other things proposed that the NYSC orientation camps remain closed for another 2 years to allow for effective Corper deployments to places of primary assignments.
The measure would ensure that there is no backlogs in deployments.
Corper Orientation was postponed in the wake of the #COVID19 pandemic outbreak . At that time, the headquarters issued a statement that the corps members would be deployed to their places of primary assignment. It also added that they would be recalled for orientation when the situation improves.
The statement at that time read that “the corps members shall be posted to commence their primary assignments forthwith, while they shall be invited back to the orientation camps when the situation improves.”
The NYSC headquarters had’ earlier in the month submitted a proposal requesting for the re-opening of the camps nationwide.
The Economic Sustainability Committee committee is also concerned about the disruptions brought on the eduction sector by the #COVID19 pandemic.
It adds that measures would be taken to minimise the disruption to education schemes by continuing to improve on the virtual learning technology.
