Popular Ogbogonogo Market in Asaba, Delta State was yesterday, gutted by fire.
Reports say the fire started from the livestock section of the market and quickly spread through the textiles materials section.
Another account says the fire started from a spark at the mobile phone section of the market following a power surge.
Throughout the nearly 5-hour inferno, 4 fire service trucks came to the scene, 2 had no water while the other 2 ran out of water. The traders undertook self help by scooping pails of water from gutters to quell the the raging plumes.
Fortunately, the main building complex was not touched. There are also reports that no life was lost as the market was under lock and key following Delta State government ordered #COVID19 lockdown.
Uche Osadebe, Chairman of Oshimili South Local Government Area where Ogbogonogo Market is located visited the scene and requested the ministry of works to assist with an excavator to pull down the damaged shops. This enabled the fire service gain access to the burning parts of the market to put out the fire fully.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa was also at the scene. He promised government financial assistance to enable the traders return to business with the shortest time possible.
